Students will view a set of six well-known public works of art from a variety of times and locations, find personal, family, and community connections to the art, and describe personal, family, and community connections with artworks. Their responses will be in the form of a model for their own three-dimensional artwork in response to a public artwork chosen from the images. They will sketch their ideas and then build the model using cardboard, glue, and paint. They may incorporate found objects into their artwork if they wish. They will have six class periods to complete the work and write a reflection.
It is important that the administering teacher not impose stereotypical definitions of family when discussing and reflecting. Include all versions of family, society, and community.
This item has been voluntarily field-tested by Michigan teachers with a non-representative sample of students.
