The mission of the Michigan Assessment Consortium (MAC, Inc.) is to improve student learning and achievement through a system of coherent curriculum, balanced assessment, and effective instruction. We do this by collaboratively promoting assessment knowledge and practice, providing professional development, and producing and sharing assessment tools and products. The MAEIA Project has been developed by the Michigan Assessment Consortium (MAC) and Data Recognition Corporation (DRC) for the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) in partnership with Michigan educators. Using the MAEIA tools and resources, schools can strengthen their systems and advance arts as a core element of a public education. MAEIA Arts Education Network (maeia-artsednetwork.org) is a virtual arts education community where educators, administrators, parents, and community members across multiple arts disciplines, grade-spans, and teaching-learning environments can use and discuss MAEIA resources, find news about arts education, converse about teaching and learning in the arts, and access support.
1. Information We Collect and How It is Collected
In describing our collection, use, and sharing of information in this Policy, we refer to our collection and use of “Personal Information.” “Personal Information,” as used in this Policy, is any information that directly or indirectly identifies an individual, including but not limited to their first and last name, mailing address, email address or other online contact information, IP address or telephone number. We collect Personal Information, as well as nonpersonally identifiable information through the website.
In our operation of maeia-artsednetwork.org and our provision of services to you and other users, we collect, use, and retain all information, including Personal Information, that you disclose to us. Our use and disclosure of Personal Information is described in this Policy. Our disclosures of Personal Information to our affiliates and other third parties are described in greater detail under the “When We Disclose Personal Information” heading below. In general, the types and amount of Personal Information we collect vary depending on the activity. We endeavor to limit the collection of personally identifiable information to information we believe is reasonably necessary to achieve our stated collection purposes.
We collect Personal Information in two ways.
- First, we collect information you provide to us in optional, voluntary submissions, such as in registration forms, user profiles, functionality such as signups for virtual or inperson events, requests for customer service, resume submissions, and emails or other communications you send
- Second, some Personal Information may be collected automatically, or passively. We may receive passively collected information through a variety of methods including, but not limited to:
- Cookies and Web Beacons. We may use a variety of methods, including “cookies” and “Web beacons,” to collect information. A cookie is a small data file that is transferred to an Internet user’s browser by a web server. Cookies are designed to store basic information, such as a user’s preferences. A Web beacon (sometimes referred to as a “clear GIF”) is a small string of code placed in a web page, email message (such as the MAC and MAEIA newsletter) or other media format in order to gather statistical usage information.
The information that we collect with these automated methods may include, for example but not by way of limitation, your IP address, information about how you interact with advertisements and other content, browser type, system type, device type, the content and pages that you access, the date and time you view pages, and the page from which you navigated to maeia-artsednetwork.org.
Clickthrough URLs. In some of our email messages, we may use a “clickthrough URL” linked to content on the maeia-artsednetwork.org. When you click one of these URLs, you pass through a separate web server before arriving at the destination page. We track this clickthrough data to help us determine interest in particular topics and measure the effectiveness of our customer communications. If you prefer not to be tracked in this way, you should not click text or graphic links in the email messages.
Location-Based Services. We may collect, use, and share precise location data, including the realtime location of your mobile or fixed-location device.
Usage Information. We log information about your use of maeia-artsednetwork.org, including the type of browser you use, how long you access websites, actions taken on our websites, whether you are a first time user or repeat user, pages viewed, your IP address and the pages you visited before navigating to maeia-artsednetwork.org.
We may also obtain information, including Personal Information, from third party sources, including through social networking sites or other third parties that incorporate the maeia-artsednetwork.org into their own websites or mobile applications. For example, if you choose to create or log into your account using your credentials from a social networking site, then we will have access to certain information from such social networking site, which may include, but is not limited to, your name, your photo or your account information, in accordance with the authorization procedures determined by such social networking site. If we directly combine information from third parties with Personal Information that we have collected, we will treat the combined information as Personal Information and handle it in accordance with this Policy. In addition, please note that we may solicit third parties to collect Personal Information on our behalf and in such cases we instruct those third parties to comply with this Policy and all applicable data protection laws.
You are under no obligation to provide, and can decline to provide, any requested information at any time. However, if you decline to provide Personal Information that is reasonably necessary to participate in certain activities, you may not be able to utilize certain activities on maeia-artsednetwork.org.
2. How We Use Personal Information
Generally, we use Personal Information to establish and enhance our relationship with our users through four main channels: (1) Communication; (2) Optimization; (3) Advertising; and (4) Sharing Features. Below, we provide some specific examples of how we use the Personal Information and other information we collect.
Communication and Responding to Requests. We use user information, including Personal Information, to provide users with customer support, respond to users’ requests, send newsletters and updates, send special offers and advertisements, seek your opinions and feedback, and connect users to MAEIA services, and to products and services of third parties.
Optimization. We use user information, including Personal Information, behavioral metrics, and other non personally identifiable information to operate, provide, improve, and maintain maeia-artsednetwork.org, to develop new products and services, to prevent abuse and fraud, and for other administrative and internal business purposes.
Advertising. We reserve the right to use user information, including but not limited to behavioral metrics and geolocation data, to personalize and display advertisements and other content for you.
Sharing Features. We use user information, including Personal Information and any other information you submit directly or through passive means, to provide you with various ways to connect and share content (e.g., web content, media, special offers, and services) with third parties. For example, we may provide you with the opportunity to email a link to certain content to another person. To use this feature, we may require you to provide certain Personal Information such as your email address and the email address of each person to whom you send the link. We will use the recipient’s email address to provide that service, but we will not use that email address for any other purpose.
We also may allow you to share links to content with users of various third party services (such as the Facebook “Like” button), including social networking sites. When sharing links using one of these third party services, if you are not already logged in to the third party service, you will need to supply login credentials for it. If you are not a registered user of the third party service, you will need to sign up for it. You are supplying the registration information or login credentials for the third party service directly to that third party, and not to us. By using any of these third party services to share links to content, you permit us to access, use and disclose any information relating to your account on each such third party service (such as your user name and profile information) that is available to us through the third party service, including through its application programming interface (API) pursuant to this Policy. For more information about the purpose and scope of data collection and processing in connection with social sharing features, please visit the privacy policies of the entities that provide these features.

We do not control and are not responsible for these third parties, their privacy policies or their use or treatment of your Personal Information or other information. You should therefore carefully review all such third parties’ privacy policies as we make no representation regarding how any third parties use your Personal Information or other information. If you consent to receiving communications from any of these third parties, you will need to communicate with them directly if you later decide that you no longer wish to receive their communications.

We require such third parties to only collect and use Personal Information in accordance with this Policy, to maintain the confidentiality, security, and integrity of such Personal Information, and for no purpose other than providing us with our requested services.
