Improvising a Melody

During this assessment, students will use their instruments or voices to improvise a melody over a provided accompaniment. Student improvisations will be scored using a Teacher Scoring Rubric.

This assessment has two parts. In Part 1, students will improvise using one note. In Part 2, students will improvise using the blues scale.

This item has not yet been field-tested.

This is an analytic rubric. The column on the left shows the dimension that is being measured in the student’s performance. The levels across the top row indicate the performance level in the dimensions. Occasionally all dimensions and performance levels are exemplified by multiple students in a single recording.
