Locomotor Directions

Locomotor Directions

Students will create and perform a locomotor sequence that includes galloping, skipping, and leaping and that travels in multiple directions on straight, curved, and zigzag pathways. The item may be adapted for third-grade students by eliminating tempo changes.

This item has not yet been field-tested.

This is an analytic rubric. The column on the left shows the dimension that is being measured in the student’s performance. The levels across the top row indicate the performance level in the dimensions. Occasionally all dimensions and performance levels are exemplified by multiple students in a single recording.

  • Student performs at least one of the designated locomotor skills (skipping, galloping, and leaping) with some technical accuracy and understanding. Student is not able to perform without significant assistance. There is no obvious tempo change.

    N/A at this time.
  • Student performs at least two of the designated locomotor skills (skipping, galloping, and leaping) with some technical accuracy and understanding. Student is able to perform with minimal support from others. There may not be an obvious tempo change.

    N/A at this time.
  • Student performs skipping, galloping, and leaping with satisfactory technical accuracy and understanding. Student is able to perform without support from others. A subtle tempo change is evident.

    N/A at this time.
  • Student performs skipping, galloping, and leaping with a high level of technical accuracy and understanding. Student is able to perform without support from others. There is at least one purposeful, dynamic tempo change.

    N/A at this time.
  • Student does not move forward, backwards, sideways, and diagonally while performing locomotor movement.

    N/A at this time.
  • Student moves in at least two directions while performing locomotor movement.

    N/A at this time.
  • Student moves in at least three directions while performing locomotor movement.

    N/A at this time.
  • Student moves in all four directions while performing locomotor movement.

  • Only one type of pathway is represented.

    N/A at this time.
  • Two pathways are represented.

    N/A at this time.
  • Straight, curved, and zigzag pathways are represented. Transitions between pathways are not performed smoothly.
