Singing Solo

Students will individually perform a song based on grade-level knowledge and skills. Students should be familiar with singing songs with dynamic markings. Dynamic markings should be present in music or may need to be added by the teacher to music score.
After the song has been taught, students will perform the song alone and be video recorded for the teacher to evaluate based on the rubric provided. Students also will complete a Reflection and Self-Assessment Checklist found in the Student Booklet. The teacher may choose the repertoire or the student may choose from a repertoire list provided by the teacher.
The rubric used for this assessment addresses accurate pitches, accurate rhythms, tonal center/home tone/resting tone, tempo, voice type, use (singing voice/speaking voice/head voice), dynamics (loud/soft or piano/forte), and vocabulary for voice type, pitch, tonal center, rhythm, tempo, and dynamics.

This item has been voluntarily field-tested by Michigan teachers with a non-representative sample of students.

This is an analytic rubric. The column on the left shows the dimension that is being measured in the student’s performance. The levels across the top row indicate the performance level in the dimensions. Occasionally all dimensions and performance levels are exemplified by multiple students in a single recording.
